Read-and-Publish Agreements with RUP Journals
Rockefeller University Press (RUP) is proud to work with institutions and consortia creatively and collaboratively towards the shared goal of providing immediate public access to peer-reviewed research. Read-and-Publish Agreements offer a sustainable framework and provide the following benefits to researchers at participating institutions:
Read: Unlimited access to all content published in JCB, JEM, and JGP immediately after publication.
- Publish: 100% coverage of the $6,000 JCB/JEM and $2,000 JGP Immediate Open Access fees on any accepted manuscript when the primary corresponding author is based at a participating institution. There is no limit to the number of articles that may be published as a part of the deal.
Open Access research articles are published under a CC-BY license, directly deposited to PubMed Central (PMC) and subsequently to Europe PMC, and archived in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS.
Monitoring and Reporting: OA Switchboard
OA Switchboard makes it easier for institutions to manage read-and-publish deals with multiple publishers. A "back office" service, OA Switchboard enables funders, institutions, and publishers to send and receive a standardized messaging between all parties via API, User Interface, or e-mail to report on deal compliance and share version-of-record article metadata, among other functions. RUP currently uses the OA Switchboard to report to its read-and-publish partners and share article metadata. We encourage more institutions, funders, and publishers to join OA Switchboard, and to contact OA Switchboard Executive Director Yvonne Campfens for more information. Learn more about OA Switchboard in this three-minute video.

Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) Read-and-Publish Transformative Agreement
Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) signed an unlimited Read-and-Publish Transformative Agreement with RUP on behalf of the Max Planck Society. The agreement, which benefits researchers at 86 Max Planck Institutes, runs from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025.
Ralf Schimmer, Head of Information Provision at the Max Planck Digital Library, said of the agreement, "the opportunity to publish their research articles openly in highly selective journals, such as the Journal of Cell Biology, provides a great benefit to our researchers and contributes to the advancement of science. We are very pleased to have reached this new transformative agreement with Rockefeller University Press, marking a further step in the Max Planck Society's strategy to enable open dissemination of research, in line with the principles of the OA2020 Initiative and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access."
